Golf Representative: Tony Isaacs

GMP Golf Society

GMP has a thriving golf section with up to 200 players, men, women, officers, staff and retirees of all abilities competing in various local, regional and national events.

The secretary organises seven events per year at a Golf Club of the Captain’s choice - this year’s fixtures culminated with our Captain, Andy Marren, welcoming us all to Bolton Golf Club on 6th September 2010.

Mike Keyworth and Mick Lawler won this event and are seen being presented with their prize by Andy Marren and Steve Heywood.

Next year’s Captain-elect, Iain Foulkes, hopes to welcome us to Breightmet Golf Club in 2011 for a number of individual, pairs and team events.

This year has already seen one of our lady golfers, Carol Ashworth win the Trophy for leading lady in her handicap category at the National Police Sport UK Championships at The Berkshire Golf Club in August.

Competing in the event with her GMP colleagues, Alison Green and Vanessa Jardine, the trio described the course as stunning, with more heather on it than in the whole of Scotland. Credit also goes then to Vanessa for not losing a single ball during the championship event.

Unfortunately last years male star turns, Craig Cuthbert and Iain Foulkes, did not live up to expectations at this year’s men’s English Championships, held at Moortown in Leeds, but our intrepid secretary, Tony Isaacs, did break the course record for number of balls lost in one round. He’s now taking lessons from Vanessa.

Even more of a ‘shock’ than Tony losing 18 balls was the look on Mark Coulson’s face as he dropped the coveted Ryder Cup (Moortown hosted the first ever fixture) in full view of the Secretary and Honoured Championship Committee guests.

GMP are the current holders of ‘The Hart Trophy’, which is fiercely contested every year in October at Mere Golf Club, against all the North West region forces. As one of the premier events of the year, entry is by selection on merit, with GMP having already qualified for the finals in October, by virtue of a win over Merseyside in the last round.

The Police Sport UK Men’s (net) Championships were held on the 12th to 14th September at Buckingham Golf Club, with Martin Bottomley posting the best scores of the North West Region players, finishing in the top ten nationally.
