LATEST NEWS

In the recent, Police Sport UK swimming and water polo Championships in Cardiff. The star of the swimming team was PCSO Aaron Jones who won the 50m Butterfly, 2nd in the 50m freestyle and Breastroke in some excellent times narrowly missing out on a spot in the British Police swimming team.
PC Paul Frith swam a marathon 7 events during the championships with a 5th place in the 400m freestyle, 4th in the 200m freestyle, 3rd in the 50m butterfly and 3rd in the 50m freestyle amongst other good swims. PC Nicola Veitch had some good swims in her first championships with a 3rd place in the 50m breastroke, 4th place in the 100m breastroke and 11th place in the 100m individual medley. The officials at the event this year were extremely strict with the rules and unfortunately Katy Conner and the men’s and women’s relay teams were disqualified in their events. Also worth a mention was PS Dave Holt’s creditable swim in the masters 50m freestyle.
GMP made up the majority of the Northwest water polo team, with some excellent individual performances from Nicola Veitch and Nicola Holt in their first appearance for the team, another outstanding moment was the penalty save by goalkeeper DC Dave Broad against the South West. The North West team won games against the Southwest, Scotland and the Midlands before meeting the Metropolitan police in the final game of the weekend. With 3 minutes to go the team were 7 goals to 5 down and due to a tremendous team effort got it back to 7 all with 23 seconds to go. The Met called a dubious timeout and scored a fluke winner with only 10 seconds left on the clock. Leaving the team disappointed at having to settle for 2nd place. For their efforts the following players were then picked to represent the British Police team for the next 12 months, DC Steve Davidson (Capt.), PC Geoff Dover and DC Graham Elleray.
Next year’s championships will be hosted by Essex Police on the 2nd and 3rd of March. If you wish to compete in the swimming and water polo, please email Steve Davidson for further information at stephen.davidson@gmp.police.uk .
