Hon. Life President : Chas. Horan OBE QPM President : Ron Webster MBE
Society e-mail : caminada.society1@ntlworld.com
Dear Colleague,
Autumn Lunch, Thursday, 2nd. October, 2008.
This year’s Autumn Lunch has been arranged for the above date in the Anderton Suite at the Hough End Centre, Mauldeth Road West, Chorlton-cum-Hardy. Reception is in the Bar at 12.30p.m. and the meal will be served at 1p.m. The cost of the three course lunch, with full waitress service, is £16 – including staff gratuities. Details of the Menu are shown overleaf and an early reply, to the Treasurer, received no later than the 25th. September, would be appreciated. Guests are welcome and it would be of assistance, to avoid duplication, if their names were provided. Members wishing to be seated at the same table as particular friends should advise the Treasurer accordingly and he will endeavour to make the necessary arrangements.
The guest speaker will be retired D.C.I. and Caminada Society member Dez Ardern, who initially joined the Cheshire Constabulary but subsequently served in G.M.P. He then set up a training company (with two professional boxers) and 10,000 people, throughout the U.K. and Saudi Arabia, attended courses designed to help those at risk of violence and aggression, whilst a separate company was formed to train security guards. Dez was also involved with an I.T. company creating software for the motor car industry and even found time to become President of the Stockport Rotary Club. General George Smith Patton (Junior), who was based at Knutsford and Macclesfield during part of World War Two, will be the subject of Dez’s talk – which promises to be something a little bit different!
Another highlight of the day will be the Raffle. Please contact the Treasurer if you are able to contribute a suitable prize.
Cheques, drawn in favour of “The Caminada Society”, should be forwarded to the Treasurer with the tear-off slip on the reverse side of this letter completed to indicate your requirements for the day. Subsequent cancellations, made by telephone to the Treasurer or Secretary, will ensure that any appropriate refunds are made.
Yours sincerely,
Terry Harding
Secretary.
The Society is a section of the G.M.P. Sports & Social Club and was established in 1984 by retired members to further good fellowship.
If you have received this Newsletter by e-mail, please note that you will no longer be sent Caminada Society communications by “snail mail”. We shall, of course, continue to post out copies of the Newsletter to those members who are unable to receive e-mails and will make every effort to contact as many of you as possible regarding matters directly affecting the Society. Please do not hesitate to contact the Secretary if you are unhappy with the new arrangements. We are trying to improve our service to you and will be happy to hear your suggestions as to how we can do this. Why not come along to one of the monthly meetings - if you do not do so already - and discuss the future of your Society?
The Christmas Lunch will be held in the Anderton Suite at Hough End on Thursday 4th December. The guest speaker has yet to be booked and full details of the event will be circulated in November’s Newsletter.

NORTHERN LUNCH 2008
Hon. Life President : Chas. Horan OBE QPM President : Ron Webster MBE
Society e-mail : caminada.society1@ntlworld.com
Dear Colleague,
Traditional Sunday Lunch and Entertainment (with a Northern Flavour): Sunday, 14th.September, 2008.
Once again, we have decided that it is time to invite ladies and guests to join us for a Caminada Society Sunday Lunch in the Anderton Suite at the Hough End Centre, Mauldeth Road West, Chorlton-cum-Hardy. Such an event is always an unforgettable experience. In the past, we have had the “D” Day and “V.E.” Day Lunches, at which we have been entertained, in their own inimitable style, by “The Sunshine Boys”. Unfortunately, they now claim to have retired - only time will tell! So, on Sunday, 14th.September, 2008 at 12.30p.m. we shall be introducing Mr. Mike Riley to the Hough End audience. Mike is a very talented local folk musician and all-round entertainer. An afternoon in his company promises to be another Caminada Society Spectacular. Make sure you don’t miss it! In addition, we hope that our own John Stalker will be on hand with some vintage Manchester City Police humour. That, again, is something not to be missed.
Another highlight of the day will be the Raffle. Please contact the Treasurer if you are able to contribute a suitable prize.
Lunch (at 1p.m.) with full waitress service, will be provided at a cost of £15 - including staff gratuities. Details of the Menu - a Vegetarian Alternative is available - are shown overleaf. Please indicate your requirements when replying to the Treasurer. An early reply, to be received no later than the 7th.September, would be appreciated. Cheques should be drawn in favour of the Caminada Society. Priority will be extended to those booking earliest and reimbursement facilities are available to those cancelling in good time.
Yours sincerely,
Terry Harding
Secretary.

The Society’s Reunion Lunch in July was well attended and the guest speaker, our own George Spurling, gave an enlightening talk on his 20 years experience as a member of the Territorial Army.
Retired D.C.I. and Caminada Society Member, Dez Ardern has agreed to be the guest speaker at the Society’s Autumn Lunch on Thursday, 2nd.October. His subject will be General George Smith Patton (Junior).
Members can receive a certificate from the Society when they reach the age of 75. Let us know your date of birth and a presentation will be arranged when you become eligible.
If you are prepared to receive the Society’s Newsletters etc. by e-mail please let us know and ensure that we are made aware of any changes to your e-mail address. We will then only send our communications to you by e-mail. Members wishing to receive Newsletters by the tried and trusted (?) “snail mail” will continue to do so but should note that we try to contact as many of you as possible regarding all matters relevant to the Society and an e-mail is often the only efficient way of doing this. Just enter your contact details in the section at the bottom of this page, return it to us and we’ll do the rest.
Caminada Society Ties can be obtained from the Treasurer.
Listen to the Sunshine Boys and keep up to date with Caminada Society news by visiting the Hough End Centre’s website, www.gmpsportsclub.com .

REUNION LUNCH 2008
Hon. Life President : Chas. Horan OBE QPM President : Ron Webster MBE
Society e-mail : caminada.society1@ntlworld.com
Dear Colleague,
Caminada Society Reunion Lunch, Thursday, 3rd.July, 2008.
Following the success of last year’s Reunion Lunch, the event is to be repeated this year and has been arranged for the above date in the Anderton Suite at Hough End. Reception is in the Bar at 12.30 p.m. and the meal will be served at 1.00 p.m. The price, including staff gratuities, is £16 and details of the Menu are shown overleaf. Please indicate if you require a Vegetarian Meal when replying to the Treasurer. An early reply, to be received no later than the 26th.June, would be appreciated. Guests are welcome and it would be of assistance, to avoid duplication, if their names were provided. Members wishing to be seated at the same table as particular friends should advise the Treasurer accordingly and he will endeavour to make the necessary arrangements.
Once again, the Reunion Lunch replaces the Society’s Summer Drive to the Alderley Social Club but there will be no games or competitions. Instead, there will be the opportunity for Members and their guests to enjoy a good meal and relax with a drink in the comfortable surroundings of our own Club. There will be plenty of time to reminisce and renew old acquaintances. However, unlike last year, there will be a guest speaker – retired Detective Inspector and Caminada Society Member – George Spurling. In acknowledgement of Veterans’ Day, George will be recalling his twenty years service in the Territorial Army. It is hoped that Members and guests will also feel encouraged to share their own memories of military service and we look forward to another memorable Caminada Society Lunch. If you have any photographs or memorabilia relating to your military service and are prepared to have them displayed on the day please contact the Treasurer and he will make the necessary arrangements.
An important feature of all our events is the Raffle and the Treasurer eagerly awaits the donation of the next batch of prizes. Please contact him if you think that you have anything suitable.
Secretary.
The recent Anniversary Lunch was preceded by the Society’s A.G.M. and both were particularly well attended. The guest speaker was our very own Dennis Wood, who gave us a wonderfully humorous “guided talk” around the G.M.P’s Newton Street Museum. Dennis has been rather poorly recently and we all wish him a speedy recovery. At the A.G.M., Charlie Horan was elevated to the position of Honorary Life President, with Ron Webster taking over as the Society’s President. Albert Leach moved up to Chairman, with the Treasurer and Secretary remaining in office for the coming year. The Society’s financial health could not be better and for that we thank our ever-industrious Treasurer, Danny Ewington. Mention should also be made of a certain Mr. Boone, Raffle Ticket Salesman extraordinaire – and we again thank Jacqui Stamper, Darren Butterfield and Martin Coughlan for their continued help and support. They and all the staff at Hough End play a large part in making our Society’s lunches such enjoyable and successful events. We wish Darren well in his new role as the Centre’s Chief Executive and are delighted that our chef Martin’s talents have been officially recognised at a prestigious awards ceremony. So, we hope that the partnership of the Hough End Centre and the Caminada Society continues to satisfy your needs as Members - but please let us know when you feel that improvements can be made. Newsletters will be sent to all those Members who require them and events will continue to be organised throughout the year. Lunches have been arranged for 2nd. October, 2008, 4th. December, 2008 and 5th. March, 2009. Full details of these and other events will be circulated in due course.
Listen to the Sunshine Boys and keep up to date with Caminada Society news by visiting the Hough End Centre’s website, www.gmpsportsclub.com.

ANNIVERSARY LUNCH 2008
President : Chas. Horan OBE QPM Society e-mail : caminada.society@ntlworld.com
Dear Colleague,
Caminada Society 24th.Anniversary Lunch, 2008.
The above event will take place on Thursday, 3rd. April, 2008 in the Anderton Suite at the Hough End Centre, Mauldeth Road West, Chorlton-cum-Hardy, commencing at 12.30 p.m. for a one o’clock meal. However, members should note that the Society’s A.G.M. will be held in the restaurant at 11.30 a.m.
The speaker will be Caminada Society member Dennis Wood, who will be giving us a “guided talk“ around the G.M.P’s Newton Street Museum. This should be an unforgettable experience, full of the Police humour for which our guide’s books and talks are now famous.
The cost of the meal is £16, including a gratuity for the domestic staff. Full waitress service will be provided. Cheques should be drawn in favour of “The Caminada Society” and sent to the Society Treasurer by the 27th. March at the very latest. Guests are welcome and it would be of assistance, to avoid duplication, if their names were provided. In order to simplify seating arrangements, members wishing to be seated at the same table as particular friends should contact the friends and list details for forwarding to the Treasurer together, where possible, with an inclusive cheque for all those named. Amendments can be made by telephone and refunds/extra payments arranged. Please complete the attached slip overleaf and return to the Treasurer.
For this meal, members will see that we feature a Chef’s Choice. Martin Coughlan and his staff are genuinely and deservedly an award-winning team, whose talents we perhaps take for granted. With that in mind, the salmon main course is given star billing – a pleasant change to our normal meal – but Martin assures me that roast beef and Yorkshire pudding or a lovely vegetarian tart will be on offer for those who do not accept his recommendation. Whatever your choice, please come along and join us. I know that you will not be disappointed.
Another highlight of the day will be the Raffle. Please contact the Treasurer if you are able to contribute a suitable prize.
Yours sincerely,
Terry Harding
Secretary

The recent Anniversary Lunch was preceded by the Society’s A.G.M. and both were particularly well attended. The guest speaker was Idwal Jones, a Past President of NARPO, who entertained us with anecdotes that were both humorous and informative. Albert Leach kindly agreed to become our Vice-Chairman, whilst the Chairman, Treasurer and Secretary were all asked to remain in office for another year. The Society’s finances appear to be very healthy, thanks to our hard working Treasurer – ably assisted by a certain Mr. Boone, Raffle Ticket Salesman extraordinaire – and we continue to enjoy a happy relationship with the Hough End Centre. In particular, we thank Jacqui Stamper, Darren Butterfield and Martin Coughlan for their continued help and support. We hope that you are happy as Members of the Caminada Society – but please let us know when you feel that improvements can be made. It is your Society and we aim to keep you satisfied and well entertained. Newsletters will be sent to all those Members who require them and events will continue to be organised throughout the year. Dear Colleague,
63rd.“D“ Day Anniversary Lunch, Sunday, 3rd. June, 2007.
There are members of the Society who remember well the event that turned the tide of the Second World War. That was the invasion of German occupied Europe by the Allies on the 6th. June, 1944. Indeed, there are members who participated in the “D” Day Landings.
The Society’s 60th. Anniversary Lunch in celebration of the event was so successful that a repeat has been planned. It will take place on Sunday, 3rd. June, 2007 in the Anderton Suite at the Hough End Centre, Mauldeth Road West, Chorlton-cum-Hardy, from 12 noon onwards. Ladies and guests are welcome and music will be provided by the Sunshine Boys in the idiom of the Second World War.
Several members who served in the War and were actually present at the Landings have indicated their anxiety to survive long enough to attend the Lunch. Dick Foster, now 90 and recovering from a fractured hip, will be bringing his war time bride – with whom he is still very much in love! Please come along and join them. We promise you a day to remember!
A three course lunch with waitress service will be provided at a cost of £15, including staff gratuities. Details of the Menu are shown overleaf. Please indicate your requirements when replying to the Treasurer. An early reply, to be received no later than the 25th. May, would be appreciated. Cheques should be drawn in favour of the Caminada Society. Priority will be extended to those booking earliest and reimbursement facilities are available to those cancelling in good time.
Yours sincerely,
Terry Harding
Secretary.
Members are asked to give consideration to the future of the Society’s Annual Summer Drive to the Alderley Edge Sports and Social Club. This was once a popular event, with members taking part in Snooker, Darts, Dominoes, Crib and Crown Green Bowling Competitions. We enjoyed a superb buffet and were made most welcome at the comfortable and well-equipped Club. However, interest in the event has waned over recent years and transport to and from the Club is no longer provided. This has resulted in the 2005 and 2006 Drives being cancelled. Please let us know your own views as to whether or not we should arrange a Summer Drive for 2007.
Keith Biddle has agreed to be the guest speaker at the Society’s Christmas Lunch on Thursday, 6th. December, 2007. The cost of the three course conventional lunch is £15.00, including a gratuity for the domestic staff. Full waitress service will be provided. Details of the menu are shown overleaf. The dining accommodation is strictly limited to 120 and an early reply to the Society Treasurer, by the 30th. November at the very latest is essential to avoid disappointment. Cheques should be drawn in favour of "The Caminada Society". Guests are welcome and it would be of assistance, to avoid duplication, if their names were provided. In order to simplify seating arrangements, members wishing to be seated at the same table as particular friends should contact the friends and list details for forwarding to the Treasurer together, where possible, with an inclusive cheque for all those named, This avoids the duplication that has occurred in the past. Amendments can be made by telephone and refunds/extra payments arranged. Please complete the attached slip overleaf and return to the Treasurer. A vegetarian main course is available if required.
It is appreciated that some colleagues, for various reasons, may not be able to attend the meal but would wish to participate in the remainder of the day’s proceedings. Consequently, arrangements have been made for accommodation at 2.15 pm within the Anderton Suite for those in that category and they should return the attached slip, suitably endorsed, to the Treasurer. The same arrangements will be made for those unsuccessful in securing a dining place and they will be notified by ‘phone.
Yours sincerely,
Terry Harding
Secretary.
A number of events will be arranged throughout the year 2007, hopefully to suit all tastes. Details of such events will be circulated periodically to those wishing to remain on the mailing list. It is appreciated that there are some older members who may wish to be kept informed of happenings but are not able to attend functions. The Society’s Newsletter will continue to be sent to all members who require it.
2006 has been another successful and enjoyable year for the Society. Once again, we have enjoyed good food, good drink and good company in the Hough End Centre, where the staff continue to provide us with a standard of service which is second to none. Our monthly Committee Meetings at the Centre have seen us put the world to rights, whilst the recent Autumn Lunch was a unique and moving event at which Albert Leach was the guest speaker and paid tribute to the Manchester City Police Officers who died during the First World War. We thank both Albert and his colleague – Tony Bowden – for all their hard work in preparing the presentation. Arrangements were made for it to be recorded and we hope to place the recording on the Hough End Centre website very soon. Our thanks are due to Eric Tetlow and Darren Butterfield (Manager of the Hough End Centre) for making this possible. To keep up to date with all the news from the Society just log on to www.gmpsportsclub.com , where you can even listen to The Sunshine Boys, whose music can also be enjoyed in the lounge at the Hough End Centre on the first Saturday evening of each month. Admission is free and food is available.
A monthly meeting of the Society is held in the lounge at Hough End on the first Thursday at 3p.m. This is very much an informal and social occasion, involving reminiscences and welfare. It is also an opportunity to discuss future events. There is no fee for membership and each event held by the Society is self-financing. The only requirement is that of Police Pensionership and a convivial countenance.

Dear Colleague,
Autumn Lunch, Thursday, 19th. October, 2006.
This year’s Autumn Lunch has been arranged for the above date in the Anderton Suite at Hough End. Reception is in the Bar at 12.30 p.m. and the meal will be served at 1.00 p.m. It will be a three course lunch with waitress service. The price of the meal is £15, which includes staff gratuities. Details of the Menu are shown overleaf. Please indicate if you require a Vegetarian Meal when replying to the Treasurer. An early reply, to be received no later than the 12th. October, would be appreciated. Guests are welcome and it would be of assistance, to avoid duplication, if their names were provided. Members wishing to be seated at the same table as particular friends should advise the Treasurer accordingly and he will endeavour to make the necessary arrangements.
The speaker will be Albert Leach, who retired from GMP as Divisional Commander of the “ E “ Division in 1983. He had joined the Manchester City Police in 1953, after National Service with the Royal Military Police. Many members will be aware of Albert’s interest in the Great War, in particular First World War Battlefields and Military Cemeteries, which will be the theme of his talk. Some months ago, Thursday afternoon Committee Members persuaded him to talk about his research into the subject. The result was both moving and informative, especially as Albert was able to provide details of the Manchester City Officers who had fallen in the conflict. We thank him on behalf of the Society and GMP for all his hard work in ensuring that those Officers are not forgotten and are confident that his talk will be a memorable one.
Secretary.
The Christmas Lunch will be held in the Anderton Suite at Hough End on Thursday 7th December, with Alan Boardman being our Guest Speaker. Alan retired from GMP as a Detective Chief Superintendent in 2000, having previously served in Bolton Borough and Lancs. County. We are told that he is a humorous and entertaining speaker but have promised him that his only rewards will be a free meal, a Certificate of appreciation and a Caminada Society Tie. He’s still keen to come and even wants to join the Society.
The Sunshine Boys are making their return to Hough End and the Winter Season commences in the Lounge on Saturday 7th October at 8.30p.m. Subsequent performances can be enjoyed at that time on the first Saturday evening of each month. There is no admission charge and food is available.
Listen to The Sunshine Boys and keep up to date with Caminada Society news by visiting the Hough End Centre’s website, www.gmpsportsclub.com.
The Greater Manchester Police Big Band is to perform at The Hough End Centre on Friday 20th October. The night will consist of 3 hours of swing and jazz in the unforgettable styles of Sinatra, Miller and now Buble. Tickets will be just £4 and bar food will be available. A three course candlelit dinner can also be booked at £12.50 per head. Menus can be requested by emailing darren@gmpsportsclub.com.
The Summer Drive to Alderley Edge and the annual games tournaments were again cancelled this year, because of insufficient interest. The future of this previously popular event will obviously have to be reviewed.
The Society continues to have its monthly Committee Meetings at Hough End at 3p.m. on the first Thursday of the month. October’s meeting will be held on Thursday 5th October. There is no fee for membership and all the Society’s events are self-financing. The only requirement is that of Police Pensionership and a convivial countenance. Our meetings are very informal social gatherings, a time for reminiscing and discussing welfare matters. New members are always welcome.

AUGUST 2006 NEWSLETTER
President : Chas. Horan OBE QPM Society e-mail : caminada.society@ntlworld.com
Dear Colleague,
Caminada Society Annual Summer Drive, Thursday, 6th. July, 2006.
This year’s Summer Drive has been arranged for the above date, when we shall again be visiting Alderley Edge and taking part in the Society’s Snooker, Darts, Dominoes, Crib and Crown Green Bowling Competitions. As usual, the venue is the Alderley Edge Sports and Social Club, where we are confident that we shall enjoy a lavish buffet in the Club’s welcoming and comfortable atmosphere. Our more competitive and active members can also take part in the above-mentioned fiercely contested competitions, whilst the rest of us encourage them, insult them, or just fall asleep!
Members may remember that this event in our Annual Calendar had to be cancelled last year, due to lack of interest. In view of this, the Committee discussed the future of the Summer Drive at the Society’s May meeting and concluded that a total of at least 30 members/guests would have to attend to make the various competitions and transport feasible. With that in mind, interested parties are asked to contact the Treasurer at their earliest convenience and if the response is inadequate the event will again be cancelled.
Unlike previous years when GMP lent the society a coach and driver or the society met the cost of transport, this year there is no transport provided. Members will have to find their own way to the Club. Personal arrangements for transport with other colleagues who are attending can obviously be made but such arrangements are the responsibility of the individuals concerned, NOT the Society.
Frank Atkinson has kindly contacted the Club on our behalf and we thank him for this much valued service to the Society. The Buffet will cost £10 per head but we all know that the hospitality and food awaiting us are well worth it, so please send your positive reply to the Treasurer, at the above address, to arrive no later than Friday, 30th.June. Cheques, drawn in favour of “The Caminada Society”, should be forwarded with the tear-off slip on the reverse of this letter completed to indicate your requirements for the day. Subsequent cancellation, made by telephone to the Treasurer by Friday 30th June, will ensure that the appropriate refund is made.
Yours sincerely,
Terry Harding
Secretary.
Details of forthcoming events for the current year will be circulated to Members as they become available. You can rest assured that our extremely high standards will be maintained.
The Society’s 22nd. Anniversary Lunch was held at Hough End on Thursday, 20th. April. Tony Fletcher was our most entertaining guest speaker and the food and service provided by the Centre were, as ever, out of this world. In particular, our thanks are due to Martin Coughlin and Darren Butterfield. Martin is a chef beyond compare and Darren, the Club Manager, can always be relied upon to ensure that “it’s alright on the night!” The Lunch was followed by a short Annual General Meeting of the Society, at which brief reports were presented by the Chairman, Treasurer and Secretary, all of whom were subsequently re-elected. The Committee appeared to think that all is well with the Society but it was felt that support should be given to its Officers to ensure that everything runs smoothly in the event of illness etc. Deputies have now been appointed and the future is bright.
We are always prepared to welcome suitably qualified and acceptable newcomers to our ranks and the previously mentioned Darren Butterfield has recently accepted the Committee’s invitation to become a member of the Society in recognition of his continued support and assistance over the years.
The Sunshine Boys hope to return to Hough End later in the year to resume their monthly Saturday night concerts and you can sample their music by visiting the Centre’s website, www.gmpsportsclub.com .
The same website will also contain our Newsletter for online viewing and printing and also has details of the Society. This can all be found quite easily by clicking on the CAMINADA link button.
Society Ties can be purchased from the Treasurer.
A monthly meeting of the Society is held in the lounge at Hough End on the first Thursday at 3p.m. This is very much an informal and social occasion, involving reminiscences and welfare.
